Talking about creating quality time over at Mamapedia

iStock_000013745254XSmallCreating Quality Time by Ignoring the Clock…

One Saturday, when my daughter and I were out running errands, she climbed into the front of the car and with a huge smile on her face, stood up through the sunroof. “I’ve always wanted to do this!” she shouted, reaching her hands to the sky.

Even though we weren’t moving (we were parked in front of a store), she was having a blast.

“This is so fun!” she laughed.

And that’s how our whole morning went.

She and I had started out earlier to run errands…

I had my list of things to do and was looking forward to being productive.

But a few minutes after leaving the house, as we neared the Starbucks around the corner, a thought came to me…

I'm a featured blogger on Mamapedia Voices

How my book came to be a Snippet

When I first started my parenting blog several years ago, I had no idea what I was doing, other than I knew I wanted to share some of my writing and parenting articles with moms.

I was instantly struck by the sense of community online and the desire among moms to connect with each other. There seemed to be such an openness about all that comes with being a parent (the good, the bad, the pretty and the ugly), and it taught me to be more open in my own parenting journey.

It also helped me find my writing voice. I was encouraged and inspired by the stories and comments from women on my blog, and I wanted to find a way to bring more moms together and encourage them too.

So I began writing a book for moms. About seven months later, I finished the first draft of Finding Mommy Bliss.

That was in 2009.

I wrote a proposal for it, sent it to an agent (Chip MacGregor)… and held my breath, hoping he liked it.

The good news was, he did.

But the not-so-good news (for me at the time) was that he declined it, explaining that the market wasn’t right for that type of book just then, and that I needed to continue to build my platform. He said he’d be happy to look at it again in the future.

A few years passed and, after many revisions and edits to my manuscript, I emailed Chip to ask if he might still interested in looking at the project.

He said yes.

And now, here it is several months later, Chip is my agent, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to be part of the team represented by MacGregor Literary.

In between these happenings, I was invited to be one of the authors to take part in the launch of a new app called Snippet with Finding Mommy Bliss…

A question for moms (and it’s all about bliss!)

Hi everyone,

I hope you had a great weekend. It’s been so beautiful here in Northern California–clear and sunny after several days of heavy rain. The grass is green, the trees are blooming, and it’s about 65-70 degrees. I have such spring fever and a sense of excitement about Easter and all the good things to come in the next few months!

One of the things I’m really excited about is a parenting workshop I’m teaching at the end of April that’s partially taken from the book I wrote – Finding Mommy Bliss. I’m really looking forward to the workshop and spending the morning with other moms! And I’d love for you to be involved too, by sharing your answers to some questions I have today.

As I’ve been finalizing my book over the past year, talking to other parents, and doing research, one thing that has stood out for me is the value and benefit of moms sharing parenting experiences with each other.

So, today, I’d love to get your input on a couple of things and then hopefully incorporate your nuggets of wisdom and experiences into my workshop. (I know you are a quiet bunch, but don’t be shy! Feel free to share, either in a comment to this post or an email to me. :)

Here’s a little more about the workshop:

Finding Mommy Bliss: Being a happy mom isn’t about sailing through motherhood. It’s not about having it all together or having the best kids. Parenting can be chaotic, stressful, and complicated. There are temper tantrums and sibling squabbles. There is self-doubt and frustration, even fear and uncertainty. But there is also laughter and love… and, yes, even bliss. Be encouraged while you learn parenting tips and resources that will help you discover the bliss in being a mom (even when it’s hiding under mountains of laundry!).
And here are my questions (I’m keeping them general on purpose, so feel free to expand in your answers):

1.  Merriam Webster defines bliss as “complete happiness, paradise, and heaven.” How do you find your “bliss” in the middle of parenting? (Prayer, exercise, time to yourself, time with other moms, perspective, humor, etc? What works best for you?)

2. What tip or tips would you give other moms who might be struggling to find joy? Feel free to share an experience, a lesson you’ve learned as a mom, a time you’ve gone through parenting challenges and how you were able to overcome them, or anything you think might help!

Thanks for any input, moms! I truly appreciate it!

Children’s book news, The Mom Initiative, courage and some great blogs

Happy Friday, everyone! It’s been a while since I’ve joined Jennifer in 7 Quick Takes; it seems like every week I intend on writing a post with quick updates and joining in, and the next thing I know it’s Thursday and I’m out of time. So I’m starting this post on Monday night to make sure I get it done (I’m sitting here with Mike on the couch and he’s watching MMA fights - a perfect time for me to get this written!).

I have some fun things I’ve been wanting to share with you…

1. I was so excited to get book contracts for two of my children’s book manuscripts a few weeks ago (Where’s the Mouse? and Birthdays Around the World.). The publisher I sold them to is in Korea (Tuntun English, Unibooks) and has been really neat to work with. The books probably won’t be out until 2013, but I’m really excited. I’ll keep you posted when they are in print; I’ll probably do a giveaway here for copies like I did last time.

2. For you moms, I wanted to tell you about a site I’ve recently become a contributor for. It’s called The Mom Initiative, founded by author/speaker Stephanie Shott,  and it’s an amazing place full of resources and support for moms. If you get a chance, check it out! I love the idea–and the heart–behind the site, and the mentor relationships it facilitates.

3. I’ve also recently joined the team over at Faith Village as a contributor. All I can say is what a cool concept. You have to stop over there and see what I mean!!

4. Something fun for anyone who is in California: the Courage to Be You golf tournament is coming up on May 4th and it’s going to be amazing! You don’t have to be a golfer to join in; there’s a dinner following the tournament that will be a blast. Find out more about this great cause, or register here!

5. Speaking of Courage to Be You, I’ve been spending more and more time helping out at this amazing organization, and my writing/blogging/email activity has changed a bit to adjust. If you’ve sent me emails with inquiries about MyCup2Yours, guest posts, or with a question, I want you to know I’m not ignoring you. I’ve seen them coming through and I’ll be doing my best to get back to you soon! Thanks for being so patient with me.

(Oh, and on a different but somewhat related note because it has to do with making your schedule easier, have any of you heard of the social media app called Buffer? I just learned about it through a colleague; evidently you can use it to set up and schedule tweets. I love the idea and I’m curious if any of you already use it and if you have any tips? I’m so not good at keeping up on twitter and I’m excited about an app that will help!)

6. On another blogging note, my friend Nicole over at The Pixel Boutique (who is the talented designer behind my blog) has some great new pre-made themes coming out at the end of this month! You can check them out here: http://www.thepixelboutique.com/premade-blog-themes. Her work is amazing!!!

7. And my friend Mary (we met when I was a Mentor Mom Coordinator at MOPS) recently launched her own blog, The Mommy Job. Here’s her description: “Are you a human napkin, a boo-boo kisser or a 24/7 special order cook? Motherhood can feel like that some days. Join me as we explore the roller coaster of motherhood with heartwarming honesty over at TheMommyJob.com. You’ll find helpful tips of being a better mom and uplifting stories from the daily trenches of motherhood “employment. Take a peek into my current article series: Sanity Savers For Busy Moms where I give tips on ways to make the every day less stressful and more enjoyable.”  Her blog is really cute and her posts are heartfelt and helpful. Be sure to over there and say hello!

Have a great weekend everyone! I look forward to seeing you back here for Mom-Monday! I have some fun news to share and a question for you that I really need your input on!

“Uncompartmentalizing” Me (A New Year’s Resolution)

About a year ago, I got an email invitation to join a group of writers and artists that meet in San Francisco once a week.

In the email, the woman who sent it to me wrote:

“I enjoyed looking through your website and blog, as well as some of your articles. Very interesting background and set of areas you work in – you keep yourself busy!”

Her invitation was sweet and I was honored to be included,  but for some reason her comment really struck me…

Because I was busy.

Stressed-out busy, actually.

I had said yes to too many things and I was feeling it.

It wasn’t until weeks later, after reading Marcus Buckingham’s book Find Your Strongest Life (I’d heard him speak at a Women of Faith conference and then bought his book), that I realized why I was feeling pulled in so many directions.

“You don’t have five different selves that you can keep separate. You have one life. One mind. One heart. One cup, if you will. Your challenge is not to separate one cup from another, erect boundaries between each, and then somehow balance them all. Your challenge is to move your life, tilt your life, intentionally imbalance your life toward those few specific moments that will fill your one cup.” -Marcus Buckingham

When I read that, I thought about the different roles I had… wife, mom, children’s book author, parenting blogger/writer, volunteer at Courage to Be You, leader of a hospitality team at church, Book Reviewer, Assistant Regional Advisor for SCBWI, working part-time at a publishing company… and that wasn’t even all.

I was definitely wearing a lot of hats and, like Marcus said, many of them were kept on separate shelves from each other as I tried to balance everything. And even though I was passionate about many of the things I was doing, there were just too many things.  I had gotten into a pattern of saying yes to pretty much every need that crossed my path.

After realizing this, and after spending time exploring my strengths, I wanted more than anything to take the walls down in my life, eliminate the compartments, and focus on the moments that would fill my one cup.

Gradually, I started to make some changes. And I realized…

Rather than trying to fill every need that comes my way, I could think about whether I was the right person to fill it, whether it fit my strengths or not… or if it would only drain me or take me away from my family.

Rather than volunteering at four different places, I could dedicate my time to one cause that I was most passionate about… and make more of an impact.

And rather than trying to keep my writing projects separate and maintaining two different websites, I could combine my sites into one and pull the different aspects of my writing life together. (Which is why I’ve brought my blog MyCup2Yours over here.)

As I’ve focused this past year more on the areas I feel called toward and applying my strengths in those areas, life has changed.

I’m still busy, but it’s an I-can’t-wait-to-get-up-the-next-day-and-do-it-again kind of busy.  And I still wear a lot of hats (although not half as many), but somehow things feel simpler and more focused. It’s been amazing to see everything in my life converge and to realize that all the experiences I’ve had—the good and the bad—have worked together to prepare me for this very time.

I look forward to sharing more detail about all that’s been going on—with parenting, with writing and speaking, and with Courage to Be You and the impact this amazing organization has had on my life, in so many ways. While I’ve been posting on my blog and continuing with writing projects, I’ve been journaling like crazy behind the scenes as I’ve been processing it all, and I’m looking forward to sharing more in the future.

So here’s to New Year of “uncompartmentalizing” our lives – of breaking down walls and removing the separate shelves.

Here’s to spending time exploring what we’re strong at and celebrating those strengths, instead of trying to improve or cover up our weaknesses, or be everything to everybody.

Here’s to intentionally unbalancing our lives so that they are tilted toward those moments that fill our one cup.

And here’s to using our strengths and gifts to help others, because when we do that, we end up finding God’s purpose for our lives and a sense of joy and fulfillment that can’t be found anywhere else.

Have a Happy New Year, everyone. Good things to come in 2012!

As the dust settles

Hi everyone,

Pardon any dust around here this week as the final changes happen behind the scenes with my blog migration from Blogger to WordPress. (I’m super excited to be switching over; thank you Nicole at The Pixel Boutique!)

I hope to be able to pop in here again before Christmas, but if not, have a beautiful holiday! Even though I haven’t been posting here as much lately, I’ve been writing like a madwoman. I’ve got so much I want to share with you this next year, and I’ve got a bunch of stuff planned for 2012. I’m really looking forward to it!

Oh, and thanks to everyone who voted for my manuscripts in the MeeGeniuswriting contest! I truly appreciate it. Winners are announced March 7th, so I will keep you posted. There will be a delay in announcing the giveaway winners here due to the work being done on my blog, but I’ll announce it next week. Thanks for your patience! (I’ll be drawing the winner from the comments on the giveaway post at mycup2yours since comments didn’t transfer in the migration over here. So if you don’t see your comment here, don’t worry. I’ve still got it on the other site.)

Have a great week!

Three ways blogging has changed my life

A few weeks ago, I got an email from a friend who was considering starting a blog and pursuing writing. She wondered if we could meet for coffee and talk.

After we met, I thought about when I was in the same place – wanting to do something more with my writing, considering what my options were.

And after sharing some of my own journey with this friend, I realized how much blogging has affected my life.

Back when I first thought about putting some of my writing online, I was thinking more of a website; I hadn’t really explored blogs. I wanted to do something that would encourage women and moms, but the perfectionist side of me hesitated. I felt like I had to design a formal website and have more of a plan before starting.

One night, when I was talking to Mike about how I was feeling, he said, “I don’t think you need to have it all figured out before you do it.  Just do it and change it as you go. It doesn’t have to be perfect.”

That (and the fact that a few days later, a friend of mine who had online experience recommended I start a blog) was just the push I needed.

So that’s what I did.

Excited and a little nervous, I created MyCup2Yours with the thought that this would be a place for people to come together for a virtual cup of coffee and some encouragement and inspiration.

I didn’t have it all figured out.

I didn’t have an agenda.

And I wasn’t sure what it would turn into.

My blog simply began with a few parenting stories and articles (and a fluttering of excitement in my heart). But over the past couple of years, it’s become much more.

It’s changed my life in three ways:

1. Blogging has helped me to find my voice. In the writing world, we’re always talking about finding your writing voice. And while I felt like I had found that voice for my writing in the children’s genre, I didn’t yet have a comfort with simply writing from my heart–from me to you–about parenting, life, or other topics. But posting on a blog a few times a week helps you find that groove. When I look at some of the older posts I’ve written, I cringe because some of them aren’t exactly well written. But that’s the beauty of a blog and being able to put something out there that may not be perfect… yet it helps you find your voice and improve your writing.

2. Blogging has helped me to live with more intent. It’s given me a heightened awareness of my role as a mom and a deeper appreciation for the little joys in parenting. When you’re blogging—at least this is true for me–you’re constantly reflecting on experiences and lessons and wanting to share them with others. You view the world through a new lens, never wanting to miss a thing. I love being able to go back to old posts on my blog with my kids and laugh and remember… and continue to learn.

3. Last, but not least, there’s  the connection with all of you. I know you might be thinking with all the different ways people can connect online (Facebook especially), who needs a blog? But I think blogs are different. It’s like going to a conference and having a variety of workshops to choose from based on topics you want to learn about and people you want to connect with. The quality of blogs out there is amazing, and when you land on one that sticks, it’s like walking into that workshop or room with friends, making yourself comfortable, and being part of a community that stimulates and inspires you.

And speaking of community: I thought it would be fun to share information about all of you so you could learn a little more about each other. I have to admit; I used to check my site stats a lot when I first started blogging, but I don’t check them very often anymore. So it was really fun to look at them in detail and learn more about you:

- last month, there were 8,600 visits here.

- two-thirds of those visits were from the United States, with the next largest number of readers coming from Venezuela, Russia, Bolivia, and Ukraine. (I love how the web connects us no matter where we live!)

- your favorite (most read) post in September was Decorating for fall (ready of not) and your second favorite was Five Reasons Why Whiteboards Are the Greatest Parenting Tool Ever.

- and another interesting fact I learned, with an average of 300 views a day and only a handful comments, is that you are a quiet bunch! I know some of you don’t have a blog of your own, but you don’t have to have a blog to comment and join in the discussion. :) One of my favorite things about comments is when someone shares something that ends up helping another reader (or me!). So whether you have a blog or not, whether you’re a mom or dad (or not), if you read something here and feel a nudge to share or join in, don’t be shy. I love hearing from you!

And now, as I look forward to switching over from Blogger to Wordpress in a couple weeks and some new functionality we’ll have here as a result, I’m more excited than ever about blogging and what’s in store for the future.

There have been so many things that have happened recently in my life that I’ve journaled about, but just haven’t had time to sit down and post here. And I’m looking forward to making the time.

So thanks to all of you for reading, and stay tuned. I’ve got some good things planned around here. :)

What about you? How long have you been blogging? How has it affected your life? If you don’t have a blog, but you read blogs, what do you like about them? List some of your favorites here and share!

183-calorie burgers, good storytelling, and getting yourself out of the fast lane

Happy Friday, everyone! I’m joining Jennifer in 7 Quick Takes again today…

1. Thanks to those of you who have been sending me your mom-stories! Keep them coming! I’ve loved reading them, and I’m keeping submissions open through August 8th. (I’ll email you if your story fits the book and if I’m interested in including it.)
2. I saw this in a newsletter I got in email this week: “Enjoy a 183-calorie burger at your next barbecue”… and I had to check it out. I don’t count calories, but I love barbecuing (not that I know how to grill; Mike does that part), and I love burgers, especially healthier ones. The burger recipe in the article has spinach, lemon, and garlic in it, and it actually sounds really good. I think I’m going to try making it, although I’ll probably use ciabatta bread for buns, instead of the whole wheat ones they recommend. :)

3.Another thing that grabbed my attention (when I was reading the 183-calorie burger thing) was this farmer’s market recipe site. (No, I’m not getting anything for plugging these sites, I just love farmer’s markets and after browsing through the website, I wanted to share it with you.) There’s a recipe for a Greek salad that sounds really good! A perfect use for juicy, ripe tomatoes.

4. On a totally different note, I ran across a great article over at ProBlogger this week: What Drama Musicals can Teach Us About Great Blog Writing. It makes some really good points, not only for blogging, but for storytelling in general.

5. Also along the lines of writing, my friend Gina Conroy recently launched her own writing critique service! I’m so excited for her, and her summer special looks great! She offers one page critiques, contest and conference critiques, and her rates are extremely affordable. Make sure to stop by her site and check it out!

6. If you’re like me and you always have a million things on your plate at any given time, I highly recommend reading this great reminder over at 5MinutesforFaith (written by my friend Barbie):  Life in the Fast Lane. I’m sure it was no accident that I happened to read the post at the end of a  particularly life-in-the-fast-lane-ish day. I sooo needed the reminder that everything does not have to be done now. :)

7. More inspiring reads–from the beautiful women at (in)courage–for your weekend:

I am a nobody and I’m proud of it

What finding yourself truly means

16 Ways to find personal rest

Have a great weekend, everyone! Do you have any fun plans? We have another swim meet. :)

I’ll see you back here for Mom-Monday!

Endings and beginnings (and blogging tips too)

Happy Friday, everyone! I’m joining Jennifer in 7 Quick Takes today…

1. For those of you in the US, I hope you had a great 4th of July! We went to our local parade then had a celebration in our neighborhood, complete with a blow-up water slide for the kids and speakers and a microphone for a talent show. It was such a fun time with family and friends and we feel so lucky to have such great neighbors!

Bailey at the parade.

Just a few of the fireworks! (We have quite a show in our court each year. This year, we probably had about 100 people gathered together watching.)

Me with just some of our awesome neighbors!

 2. Endings and beginnings: After almost two years of being the Managing Editor of 5MinutesforFaith, I’ve passed the baton to my friend and fellow writer, Barbie. Not only is Barbie a beautiful writer, she is also incredibly organized and online savvy. (She’s already doing some exciting things over at the site!) While I will really miss leading the team of amazing, beautiful women over there, I’m super excited to be sticking around and starting back up as one of the regular writers there. If you haven’t been over to the site in a while, be sure to stop by and check it out. You’ll be inspired and encouraged!

3. On a completely different note, if you’re a mom with 50-100 pounds to lose, there’s an open casting call in Long Beach, CA on July 16th. The producers of The Biggest Loser and Extreme Home Makeover are casting for a new daytime ABC show (called The Revolution) and they are looking for deserving moms who want to make a change in their lives. See more here: http://bit.ly/l3haSP (I’m not getting paid to mention this; I was contacted by the producers and just think this is a great opportunity for moms. In fact, after I emailed one of my neighbors about this opportunity, she emailed it to a friend and her friend submitted an audition application! I’m so excited for her and I can’t wait to see what happens!)

4. Some tips for anyone on twitter, I came across this excellent article on maximizing use of twitter. I wanted to share it with you because it’s a great read!

5. And for you bloggers: if you are new to the world of blogging, I came across this great article: 9 Tips for New Bloggers. It has some some good advice worth checking out!

6. My son (10) is wanting to start guitar lessons. (I’m really excited; I think he’ll love it!) There’s a group lesson through our city parks and rec department that I’m thinking would be a good place to start… Have any of your kids taken guitar lessons? Do any of you have tips for beginners or recommendations about lessons that I should be thinking about? Thanks for any advice!

7. Last, make sure to stop by for Mom-Monday next week! I am finishing up revisions to my parenting book and am looking for quotes/stories from other moms to include in it. I’ll explain more about it on Monday.

Have a great weekend, everyone! What are your plans? My daughter has a swim meet and I’m so glad that the temperature will only be about 90 here in California! (It has been 103 and 104 the last couple of days!)

Vacation!, some writing and blogging tips, and a big thank you…

I’ve got a bunch of miscellaneous updates and things to share, so I’m joining Jennifer in 7 Quick Takes today…

1. I am soooo excited! Mike and I leave for Hawaii in a few days and I can’t wait. I plan on totally unplugging, but I’ve got some favorite posts from the archives scheduled to go up next week, so if you’re new here, I hope you enjoy them! I’ll look forward to sharing about our trip and posting photos when we get back.

2. The weather has finally improved and it’s starting to feel like summer! (It sounds like from all of your comments the last couple of days, everyone’s been getting some pretty strange weather lately.) Today was around 90 degrees and beautiful. We are loving it!!!

3. For you writers, Nathan Bransford had a post recently about How to Craft Mystery in a Novel, and another post about remembering that Rejection Is Not Personal. (Something every writer needs to keep in mind!)

4. And for you bloggers: if you’re looking to learn more about maximizing your blog and improving your content or increasing traffic, be sure to visit The SITS Girls, where they’re working through ProBloger Darren Rowse’s 31 Days to Build a Better Blog eBook. Great tips and resources.

5. If you’re local to the Sacramento area, join my friend and fellow children’s author, Anne Bowler, at the Roseville Library on Monday the 13th for a storytelling event. And be sure to bring the kids; it sounds like it will be a lot of fun.

6. Another thing if you’re local: have you heard of Sacramento Bee’s Sacramento Connect? It’s a network for local blogs and community news, and it is awesome. (I’m not getting any perks to say that… I’ve just been part of this network for a while now and I think it’s a great resource for local information!) Check it out!

7. Last, I want to take a minute and say thank you for stopping by and reading. I was looking at some of my older posts recently and realized I started MyCup2Yours almost three years ago (minus the seven-month break I took to work on one of my manuscripts and then ended up with the arm and knee injury!). This place here, and all of you, have become such an important a part of my life. I love your comments and emails, and the way you’ve reached out to me and others here. It’s been fun getting to know many of you, and I smile each time I see your name come through my email from a comment. I apologize I haven’t been very good about replying to comments lately; it has been a struggle to find the time, but please know I read and appreciate each and every one!

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! As a reminder, I’ll be taking a break from Mom-Monday next week because I’ll be sitting on a beach enjoying the ocean with Mike and no kids!!!! (Can you tell I’m excited?! It’s our first kid-less full week away in twelve years! I know I’ll miss the kids like crazy, but I’m looking forward to the time alone!). I’ll be back here on 6/20 to continue with my two-part series on being a more grateful mom and helping our kids to be more grateful too! Aloha!

Hugs to all of you!
