The ultimate test of a relationship

I can hardly believe it, but in a couple of months, I’ll be a mom to a teenager.

It’s such an amazing age,

but I have to admit,

some days I feel like I’m learning as I go.

Learning and praying that I get this parenting thing right.

Last week was a rough week.

Mike was out of town and it was one of those weeks where I felt like I had to say everything three times.

But then,

today,

as I sat down to work on revisions to the parenting book I’m writing, I came across this quote:

The ultimate test of a relationship is to disagree but to hold hands.

~Quoted by Alexandra Penney in Self

And I was reminded that some days, parenting is hard.

And we don’t always have to agree on everything.

We just need to keep holdings hands.

How about you? Are you parenting a pre-teen or teenager yet? It’s such a great age and it’s so neat to see my kids growing up, but it’s scary and tenuous at the same time. It seems like some days, just as I feel like I’ve got being a mom all figured out, I realize I’m starting all over.  Any tips or advice from moms of teenagers would be appreciated!

  1. A parent of a teenager needs to sit on them — yet let them spread their wings. Sometimes this is a hard balance. All the while loving them.

Oh Debbie – well said! I’ll have to remember that!

  2. Yes this parenting thing is hard. I think hard at any age but especially the teen years. My oldest will be 12 this year and it’s showing. He’s testing the waters and I fell like the waves are crashing all around me. I pray for him everyday while he navigates the teenage streets to manhood. Oh and I pray for my sanity too.

Praying for them every day… me too! It seems like the older they get, the more I realize how little I can control. Being able to pray for them and trust God… knowing He has them in His hands… that helps more than I can say.

  3. I’ve been there. I never really felt like I did the best job parenting my two oldest, now 20 (daughter) and soon to be married and 17yo son. But my two oldest are such great kids. I really just had to let go and believe that God would steer them where they would need to go if I failed. And I did, but God never did. They are both serving the Lord with fire and passion. Now I am looking forward to parenting my 11yo and 8yo through their teen years.

    Love the quote! So true!
