Giveaway winner and parenting workshop

Hi everyone,

I’m just popping in to announce the winner of the giveway for Lynnette Kraft’s beautiful book, He Heard Hannah. Congratulations to commenter number 6, Missy Rose Ewing! (Missy, send me an email with your informaton so I can arrange for you to get a copy of Lynnette’s book!)

I’ll be away from here for a few more days busy at Courage to Be You and also preparing for a parenting workshop I’m doing on Saturday. If you’re local (Northern California), you can find out more about the workshop or sign up here. It’s going to be a lot of fun and I’d love to see you there!

I’ll be back next Monday for Mom-Monday!

Talk soon!

A giveaway winner (just in time for Christmas)

Congratulations to Eric at Happy Birthday Author, who was commenter #14 on my giveaway post, and who won the pack of three of my children’s books! (Eric, I’ll send you a separate email so I can get the books to you.)

Thank you again to everyone who voted for my manuscripts in the MeeGenius writing contest! I truly appreciate it.  Winners will be announced March 7th, so I’ll keep you posted.

We’ll be spending time with family for Christmas, but I’ll be back next week. Mike went to London on a business trip recently and I can’t wait to share some of his pictures! I should’ve gone with him!

I hope you all have beautiful Christmas and holiday celebrations!

Going green, photography, some great posts and an article you don’t want to miss…

Happy Friday, everyone! I hope you had a great week. Mine’s been a little crazy with holiday parties, getting ready for Christmas, and my daughter coming down with pneumonia, poor thing.

I’m joining Jennifer in 7 Quick Takes today… it seems like I’ve been saving up a list of things I want to share with you:

1. First, the photoverse giveaway winner: Congratulations to Melissa at FrugalCreativity, commenter #27! (Melissa, I know you’ll love what Robin makes you. Her photography is beautiful.)

2. Speaking of photography, I’ve been playing with my camera lately and have taken a couple of shots that I thought came out sort of interesting (though they don’t compare to Robin’s):

It has taken a year–or at least it seems like it!–for this one orange to grow. The kids planted the orange tree with my father-in-law several years ago and while it’s beautiful, for some reason it’s only produced a total of three oranges. So of course I had to get a picture of this one! I took the photo on a rainy day and I like the way the water shows on the orange.
A close up of a leaf in our pool. I like how the pebble tech in the background is blurred.

Buds on our pear tree on a wet day. I was trying to capture the contrast of the branches and the gray sky. I’m learning…

Even though I got my camera a year ago, I have yet to figure out all the (millions of) settings and I’ve mostly been using it on Auto. I’m determined to get better at photography this year (maybe that will be my first 2011 resolution…).

3. For you bloggers, some great posts: one about creating quality content by Jennifer James Online, and another about creating a following by Nathan Bransford. Good reads!

4. An article that will move you: A Life Beyond Reason written by Professor Chris Gabbard, in which he shares how his disabled son August has impacted him and his views on the value of human life. A very powerful piece (hat tip to Jennifer for sharing it in one of her posts).

5. I’m excited about all that we have going on over at 5MinutesforFaith. From a new look (that I can’t take credit for) to adding a few new writers to the team, things are hopping. Holley Gerth wrote a guest post at our site this week about moms that was wonderful (Little Things, Big Love – Why You’re Making a Difference More Than You Know). If you haven’t stopped by lately, be sure you do. And be sure to subscribe to updates while you’re there so you don’t miss anything!

6. Speaking of the 5Minutes team… one of our sister sites, 5MinutesforGoingGreen, had a great post not too long ago about the dangers of Polyvinyl Chloride Plastic (known as PVC). Click on over and check it out. It’s important information.

7. And, last, another green note: There’s a company called Green Light Apparel  that is doing some pretty cool things to positively impact people and the planet. (I’m not getting compensated to mention them; I just  heard about them and I like what they’re doing, so I wanted to share.) The company makes clothes for events like fun-runs, walk-a-thons, or corporate groups and donates 10% of each sale to one of their humanitarian Partners For Change charities to help underprivileged children. They use natural, renewable fibers produced in a sustainable way and they donate a percentage of their sales to environmental causes. Sounds like a win/win/win to me. If you ever need t-shirts for an event or if you work for a company that orders shirts for large groups or anything like that, visit Green Light’s website and check them out.

I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Do you have any fun plans?

I’ll see you back here on Mom-Monday.  :)

A great giveaway–just in time for the holidays!

My blogging friend Robin from Around the Island–who happens to be an accomplished fine art and nature photographer–has recently begun making photoverse prints.

The prints combine her photography with verses, poems, or custom quotes.

I’ve admired Robin’s photography for a while. Here’s one of her pictures:

I love the contrast here between the blue in the vase and the orange flower!

She has a way of capturing lighting, angles, nature and architecture that somehow makes you feel when you look at her work. And I love the way she’s using her photographs (which are stunning) to create her new line of photoverse prints. I think they make such  personal, meaningful gifts.

Click over to Robin’s Etsy shop to check out some of her beautiful photos!

And here’s the great news:

She’s giving away a photoverse print here, just in time for the holidays! The print will be 5 x 7 and will be matted on single weight matte board. (Framing is not included, but can be purchased.)

The winner of the print can choose from any photo in her her Etsy shop and can supply any (reasonable length) verse with it. Photos with a bit of space in them work best, as do shorter verses.

Examples in the Christian Art section of her shop are ready made, but they are simply suggestions.

Last, a bonus tip for those of you interested in photography:
When I first got my DSLR camera, Robin was nice enough to comment and recommend a photography book to me. I thought I’d pass the recommendation on to you as well. The book is Bryan Peterson’s Understanding Exposure. Enjoy!

*Update: this giveaway is closed. A winner will be announced soon.

Nugget on the Flight Deck giveaway winner!

Thanks to all of you who entered the Nugget on the Flight Deck children’s book giveaway!

I used a random number generator to select the winner and am happy to congratulate commenter #16, Michelle! (I’ll get in touch with you and will pass your information on to Patricia, who will be sending you a signed copy of her book.)

Congratulations Michelle, and thanks to everyone else who joined in!

A huge congratulations to Patricia too… Her book just won a Eureka! Silver Honor Award from the California Reading Association. The Eureka! Award is new this year and is given to outstanding children’s nonfiction. :)

A Children’s Book Giveaway You Don’t Want to Miss – Nugget on the Flight Deck

One of my writing friends, Patricia Newman, who’s a very talented children’s book author and a Co-Regional Advisor for SCBWI in North/Central California, recently had another picture book published…

and she’s giving away a signed copy of it here!

Before I get to the giveaway details, here’s a description of her book:

Calling all future pilots for a crash course in aircraft carrier lingo. Climb aboard the bird with Lt. “Gutts” Guttman and his pal, Nugget, as they catapult off an aircraft carrier they call Mother. Pull a few Gs and test out your flight skills in a practice dogfight or check out the jets in the hangar. The lieutenant keeps the jargon flowing during this tour of duty that will have young readers spooled up to use their new vocabulary. Expertly researched and dynamically illustrated, this patriotic adventure is chock full of information for military buffs and aspiring aviators alike.

*Illustrated by Aaron Zenz.

Here’s what others are saying about it:

“A great introduction to fighter jets and aircraft carriers for young readers.”—Booklist

“Although this book will have special appeal to the children of military families, anyone interested in planes will appreciate the high level of information provided in an attractive, accessible format.”–School Library Journal

“The pictures are action packed. The text is action packed…I loved reading this book.” –Debbie Ashley Nance, readerbuzz blog

And here’s what I say:

I love it!

My son, who is very into gadgets and technical details, says this book is, “Cool.” He liked the authentic military jargon and the fact that there are definitions and pictures explaining it. The book even includes material in the back with facts about aircraft carriers, the different types of jobs on them, and the aviator’s alphabet.

I think this is a really fun picture book, especially for boys.

And here’s something else that’s fun: In July, Patricia signed copies of her book on the USS Midway Aircraft Carrier Museum in San Diego, California, and this month she’ll be signing at the Smithsonian National Air and Space Museums in Washington, D.C.—both on the mall and at the Udvar-Hazy Center near Washington Dulles airport!

So how do you enter to win a signed copy?

-Simply leave a comment on this post (I’ll keep the giveaway open through 10/15). You don’t have to have a blog to enter. A winner will be chosen with a random number generator, then announced the week of 10/19. This giveaway is open to U.S. and international residents.

-To get two entries, visit Patricia’s website and watch the book trailer (it’s really neat), then come back here and leave a second comment, sharing something about it.

I’m looking forward to seeing who wins!   :)

**Update: This giveaway is closed to entries as of 10-15. A winner will be announced the week of 10-19. Thanks to all of you who joined in!

Jewelry giveaway winner! (and a couple of blog notes)

Thanks to all of you who joined in on my friend Kristen’s custom jewelry giveaway here this past week!

I used a random number generator to select the winning comment, and the winner is…

Commenter #5: Amber!

Amber, thanks for liking Kristen’s FB page and following my blog. I’ll send you an email and give your information to Kristen so she can contact you. You will LOVE her jewelery! If you have a minute, come back and let me know which piece you end up choosing. :)

On a totally different note:

Can I ask all of you a question? I’ve been getting a lot of spam “Anonymous” comments on my blog lately and the weird thing is, on some of the comments, when I follow the email notification link to delete the comment, it doesn’t show up on the post. Have any of you seen this on your blogs? Maybe Blogger is deleting some of the comments automatically? Any tips would be appreciated.

And another quick note:

I want to apologize for being so slow (or absent) in responding to your comments and questions lately. I do read each and every one, and I truly appreciate them.

Things have just been busy… I’ve been getting really involved with C2BU (check out the website and join the battle against child trafficking, learn what’s going on with Courage House, and watch the awesome video for the upcoming Courage Conference!). I’ve also been working on a magazine article (that I can’t wait to tell you about after it goes to print). And then there’s the fun stuff of life and mommy-hood… (as I write this, I have laundry sitting in the washer waiting to be put in the dryer, laundry in the dryer waiting to be folded, a pile of laundry in a corner of the hallway waiting to be put away, and my daughter has been sick so I’m in charge of Charlie’s litter box.) You all know how it is! :)

So thanks for continuing to stop by and read, and for being patient with me lately. I feel like I’ve gotten to know so many of you because of your comments and I truly appreciate that.  :)

Have a great weekend, everyone. I’ll see you on Mom-Monday!

Beautiful Jewelry Giveaway – Kristen’s Custom Creations

Remember the necklace I told you about that I absolutely love?

It was made by my blogging friend Kristen, who also happens to be an incredibly talented jewelry artist.

Her pieces are beautifully made, hand-stamped, and they all include a message or a touch of personalization that makes them unique. I love the way Kristen adds details too, like small pearls or charms and other custom goodies.

In fact, I love her jewelry so much that I ordered necklaces for my mom and both my sisters this past year (and they love them too).

No matter what your jewelry tastes are, whether you like small pieces:

or bigger ones,

whether you want something that inspires,

or something fun,

Kristen has something you’ll like. She makes earrings and bracelets too. And for those of you who are moms, she has several mommy necklaces to choose from (they are all so cute!). She’s even got a few daddy pieces for the dads in your life.

She’s giving away a $40.00 gift certificate for her shop here!
