The Choking Game – It’s Not a Game

My heart has been so heavy for a family near us who recently lost their teenage son.

I don’t know the family personally (they are friends of a friend of our neighbors), but their loss and the circumstances around their son’s death have been on my mind since I heard the news.

I feel compelled to share their story with you, hoping to increase awareness about a game that many kids are playing (even kids as young as nine years old).

It’s called The Choking Game.

And it can be deadly.

I admire these parents so much. In the midst of their grief, they are speaking out to make sure others know about this game, and trying to prevent more tragedy and loss.

PLEASE take a minute to read their story and watch the video clip about The Choking Game from the article.

If your kids are old enough, have them watch it too. It’s heart-wrenching, but powerful, and it gives kids ideas on how to respond if they’re asked to join in on this game.

I think one of the best things we can do as parents is arm our kids with information so if they’re asked to participate in something like this, or if they know kids who are playing it, they’ll be prepared to respond and tell someone.

They may even save a life.

Please spread the word about this game to others so more parents will be aware of it and its dangers.

  1. Heartbreaking! Thank you for sharing. My boys are only 3 and 4. I can't imagine what this family is going through.

  2. How tragic. I will keep this family in my prayers. Thank you for helping to bring awareness to this.

  3. I've had to discuss this with students & it's a very scary thing.I will include this family & the soul of their son in my prayers. Very sad & tragic.

  4. That's just heartbreaking. I read the article and watched the video. By then end of the video I was honestly almost sick to my stomach. I emailed the link to my husband to watch before we show it to Parker. I can't imagine him ever doing this…but neither could the parents of the victims of the game. It's important for our kids to be aware of it and educated on this and that they know how not to play or give into peer pressure if it's ever presented to them.My heart aches for the family of this most recent child. Their courage in the face of their pain is amazing. Thanks for sharing this story and the link.Jeanine

  5. One of our sons figured this out on his own when he was young, using a sock. Thank God we saw him doing it — he had no idea it was bad, was not joining in with friends, and we had certainly never heard about it. I am so very sorry when I hear about kids losing their lives to this. I will say prayers for the family you spoke of.

  6. It's so very sad. I have heard of this and apparently it's quite common these days – very scary. I'm glad they are speaking out about it even in this time of grief. Thanks for sharing the story!

  7. I know this game, if you can call it that, has been around for a very long time. I admire this family for speaking out about this in the wake of their own personal tragedy.

  8. That is so heartbreaking. This happened to a boy in my class in high school. It was called a suicide but all the evidence leads to the choking game. Same as the story I just read. So sad.

  9. Genny, my heart breaks for this family. Just a few months ago we watched a video about the choking game, then we watched it again WITH our boys (they are 14 and 16) then had a family discussion about it. What a completely horrible and scary thing…just another reminder to stay involved with your kids and pray down the heavens for them too!xoxo, Melissa

  10. My heart breaks for that family. What a horrible tragedy. My kids aren't old enough to understand yet, but I'm glad people are speaking out about this. There are a lot of scary things to think about when you have kids!

  11. Oh no. SO very sad. I have never heard of this, so I thank you for the information!
