A Yummy Disaster

My kids baked cookies last night.

By themselves.

It was quite an event…

They had a few problems cracking the eggs, I caught my eight-year-old pouring sugar straight out of the measuring cup… into his mouth, and they had a hard time getting all the ingredients into the mixing bowl.

The kitchen turned into a mini-disaster…

baking mess on counter
and when I told my kids that, my daughter replied, licking her fingers and smiling, “Yeah, but it’s a yummy disaster!”

She scooped the cookies a TAD bigger than normal, leaving one tiny cookie on the tray…

and then explained, “That one’s for my fish. He can’t eat chocolate chips.”

Minus all the mess and chaos–and the fact that the cookies came out the size of small pancakes and a little overdone–I have to say the kids did a great job.

The fish thought so too.

(Call me a bad fish owner, but the kids really did feed their fish cookies. And they seemed to like them just as much as we did. :)

  1. They look like they had fun! And what fish doesn't love a little treat now and then? :-)

  2. I think I have to go find some chocolate now! I love that you just let them go on their own! What fun!

  3. Oh I miss when my kids would cook on their own. I mean they still do, but they are older and the messes are less cute. ;) Happy WW!

  4. Ave

These cookies look good!So great that they thought on fish too :D

  5. I love it! I totally would have let them feed the fish, too. I think I would have enjoyed those cookies more than any other cookie.

  6. Oh my gosh! That's so awesome! LOL And your counter doesn't look too messy. :-)How fun for them, and I agree, you're a great mom for letting them do that!

  7. The kids fed the fish cookies! I've never seen a fish eat a cookie. How funny! lolhttps://atticgirl.blogspot.com/2009/09/wordless-wednesday-fall-is-on-its-way.html

  8. i love it! that was very brave of you to let them have control over the kitchen :) you should market a new fish food containing cookies! happy ww, thanks so much for stopping by.

  9. My ww is about kids cooking too! I didn't capture the mess on camera… my feet were sticking to the floor to much to track it to the camera…

  10. I am LOVING that you let the kids share their culinary creations with the goldfish–awesome!Blessings!

  11. I love it! But the mess would give me high blood pressure! I make enough mess on my own. We tend towards place and bake cookies here, I'm a great cook, but an embarassing baker!

  12. Now all you need is a picture of the fish! Too cute! (And the cookies look delicious, by the way)

  13. I always have to close my eyes to the mess my daughter makes when she creates in the kitchen! At least they are learning to love cooking.Sometimes if I don't have enough dough left to make a decent size cookie, I scatter the dough in crumbles in bake them to make cookie crumbs. Yummy! Although I wouldn't want to deprive your fish! :)

  14. That is just PRECIOUS!!! And I love that they made one for their fish. How generous. And I loved how they used parchment! :)

  15. It seems like they had fun doing it. I'm glad you guys & the fish enjoyed the treat. :)

  16. GG

I found you, Genny! I had lost your blog url, but now it's found. Yay!

  17. These are the events that memories are made of. The kitchen really is much more than the place to cook and do dishes. Yummy disasters are the best. My son made up a game that we play on the weekends. Two members of our family go head-to-head against each other in a cooking competition. Someone else gets to choose the ingredients. Who ever gets the highest score in taste, presentation, and creativity wins! No prizes-just the pride of being the best cook for the night. It's so much fun!

  18. What a fun mom you are! They must have been good if the fish survived them. :)

  19. The boys helped me make fried pork chops tonight. I don't know who had more fun…them playing in the flour or the dog eating what they dropped on the floor.

  20. Isn't it fun when kids take over the kitchen? You just never know what'll come out of there when they get creative. And those cookies do look yummy, despite the odd shape and size. :-)

  21. Thanks for the great story. What is it about those darn eggs that make them such a challenge… even to us big kids!

  22. Love it! My kids often eat more of the makings of cookies than they ever bake. You are a brave woman to let them do it alone!
