One Mom’s Story: Old Bras…

Today for Mom-Monday, I wanted to share another mom-moment story I got in response to my requests for submissions for the book I’m writing. (After reading some of the submissions, I thought it would be fun to post a few of them here.)

I love this story. It’s from one of my friends from church, Miranda, who is an amazing woman. (We served on a hospitality team together for years and you should see how she decorates tables; she is talented!) She’s also a beautiful mom filled with wisdom and grace. I’m happy to share a snippet of her life here today. Thank you, Miranda!

One afternoon, my daughter Lacie came home from school and asked if she could wear “old bras” to class the next day.

I was puzzled; she was not yet old enough to wear any bra—old or new. So why was she insisting on wearing one now?

Lacie had spent many years trying hopelessly to fit in…yet it was unlikely to happen. She is developmentally disabled, a young girl with special needs that had yet to find her way into the hearts of other children.

At her school, children pursued and teased her relentlessly day after day. It seemed hopeless and disheartening to even subject her to the endless bullying at school. Then out of nowhere, she comes home and insists on wearing an “old bra “ to school because a group of girls had ask her to.

I did everything I could to hide my tears and to protect her from yet another hurtful prank played at her expense. Yet as much as I skirted the conversation, she followed me around the house asking for her “old bras” to wear to class. I became a bit exasperated and tired of the idea of more jokes directed towards her and her naive belief that this was friendship driven.

It was getting late, but she was not giving up.

Then, as I was walking down the hallway ,it suddenly occurred to me she was not saying “old bras” at all…

she was asking to wear OVERALLS!

I quickly went to her and asked …”Do you want to wear overalls to school?”

“YES”…she was so excited that I had finally figured out what she was trying to tell me. She had three new friends and they wanted her to join them in wearing matching outfits.

I grabbed my purse and we rushed out the door to go find her a pair of overalls.

When Lacie reached her new friends at school the next day she was resplendent. Her enthusiasm was not because she had new clothes…Lacie was filled with joy because of new friends that would welcome her into their circle that day, and many more days to follow.

God had shown mercy and tenderness to my precious daughter and reminded me of how much HE loved her. He delighted in her with thoughtful girls that were kind enough to befriend and accept her just as she is…which is perfect in HIS loving eyes.

Lacie and I continue to have our little “communication” gaffes, but they are always welcomed with much laughter as I try to navigate through her language barriers. I adore my daughter and I thank God for the quirkiness and loveliness that she brings to our family!

“The soul is healed by being with children” ~Fyodor Dostoevsky

My soul was healed the day my daughter wore her overalls to class. Three young girls chose love…

and I was reminded of God’s amazing and infinite love and grace.

Today:
Lacie is nearly 27 years old. She is delightful and happy. She has many friends through the programs she attends and is still quite in love with her high school sweetheart. :)

  1. Brought tears to my eyes. There is nothing more painful than when our kids struggle – and we focus so much on protecting them, sometimes mis-trusting so much – that we almost miss the beautiful, inspiring truth that God brings us. God is gracious, merciful and amazing in what He does for us:)
