What is life without cookies?

A few days ago, my husband and I and the kids were outside with our dog Lady, who I’m sad to say is probably on her last few years with us. In fact, she’s getting so old and her stomach is so sensitive that we don’t really feed her any people food as treats anymore. So when my daughter accidentally dropped a cookie on the ground, my husband was quick to ask her to pick it up.

But before she could, Lady ate it.

“I guess everyone’s gotta have a cookie now and then,” I joked.

“Yeah,” my daughter said with a big smile on her face. Then she turned to my husband and in her infinite wisdom declared, “because what’s life without cookies, anyway?”

Excellent point.

And I’ve been thinking about that. Not about the cookies. But about the other things in life we might consider to be “treats”. The simple things. Like that bubble bath I keep wanting to take but never find time to.

So often as moms, I think we “do without” when maybe we shouldn’t. We want to take time for ourselves, and we say we will… soon. But that’s most likely after everyone else’s needs are met. And most likely when we’re beyond overdue for a break.

I’ve been working on this–trying to slow down. I did get that massage the day after things didn’t go as planned, and I’ve been trying to spend more time outside. But I’ll be the first to admit, I still have a long way to go.

So as Mother’s Day approaches, I propose we all try to make more time for the “treats” in life. Maybe it’s a much needed vacation. Maybe it’s getting a workout in. Or, hey, maybe it is a cookie.

Let’s enjoy ourselves.

And recharge.

Let’s rest and refocus.

And if we do, we’ll all be better moms—and better people—because of it.

  1. Children are so insightful, aren’t they? I like your blog. Thank you for stopping by mine!

  2. I completely agree with you! Moms need some time to be themselves and to do new things. It always helps me when I have some free time to be “me”!

  3. I love this post. It is so true and appropriate for Mother’s Day. I am pretty good about taking care of me. Probably because my husband sees it as important and always help me take some time for myself. After all, when Mama ain’t happy, ain’t noboby happy! Thats a moto around our house that I think more households should consider.

  4. This last week has been utterly chaotic and emotional for me, but last night I took the time to go to dinner with a close girlfriend. Not only did we enjoy our yummy food sans kids, but we sat and chatted for 4 hours! I felt like such a better mother today after having some time to recharge and refuel!Excellent advice!

  5. I agree! Moms need some time for themselves. A little time to relax and enjoy life.
